The American M.d and minister Thomas Staughton Savage and naturalist Jeffries Wyman initially depicted the western gorilla (they called it Troglodytes gorilla) in 1847 from illustrations got in Liberia. The name was dead set from Greek Γόριλλαι (Gorillai), suggestion "tribe of hairy women", depicted by Hanno the Navigator, a Carthaginian guide.
